The Mexican singer-songwriter has found a way to reflect on the life of her people and the human condition in general. Lila Downs was raised by an indigenous Mexican mother and a Scottish-American father. With two cultures influencing her, she first struggled to find her footing. But as she grew and went to college, she finally embraced the diverse cultures that she is a part of. A deep appreciation of her mother's culture made her return to her mother's hometown in Oaxaca, Mexico. There she started her career in music.
The Mexican singer began her career in 1994. Still, her big break came in Mexico in 1999 after her debut studio album "La Sandunga" was released. Her international success occurred two years after her album "Border." Overall, she has released fourteen fruitful albums. She has won a Grammy, five Latin Grammys, and other awards in her career.
